South America 7.31.03 Arrive in Quito
Dear Allins,
I am sending this to all the Allin email addresses I have listed. Who ever gets this email please pass it on to the family.
Quito is a very pleasant city. We have explored new town and spent a half day in old town. Last night we left our hotel for our family. The Moya family is wonderful. Amparo (wife-mother) knows a little English -- more English than I know Spanish -- German and Spanish. Daniel probably knows about as much English as I know Spanish. And their daughter, Maria Eloisa (15 anos), knows about as much English as Nancy knows Spanish (or more English than her mother).
They have two daughters and a son all living in Germany. One of the daughters in Germany is married to a German. Language has prevented me from understanding why the older children are in Germany.
We took our first Esponal lesson esta dia. Don´t you love my Spanish -- complete mastery of the language after one 4 hour lesson. This is definitely a school to learn not goof off. You get one 20 minute break during the 4 hours. Our first class was la professora, Nancy and me. The next four classes Nancy and I will each have our own professor. Constant exchange in Spanish. Very little English is spoken in the class. Most of the English is translating a new word from Spanish into English -- one time and then you are on your own with this specific word. Nancy is much father advanced than me.
When we were walking the city on Saturday y Domingo ella did almost all the talking for us.We are going to a one hour class this afternoon at 5:00 pm. I believe it is a plant class! Tomorrow evening it is Salsa dancing. Wed. evening from 5:00 to 7:00 is cooking and from 7:00 to 9:00 is city night tour. All these classes are in Espanol no ingless.
Our family provides breakfast: this morning was coffee, breakfast roll, and a bowl of papaya. themeal is at 1:30 pm: carrot soup, fruit juice, rice, meat (a hamburger paddy with onions, etc.), and a bean and carrot dish. The servings are not American size (i.e. huge) but real people size -- we won´t be putting weight on with these meals. La comida is my bien. (The meal is very good.) And the evening meal is at 7:00 pm and last night consisted of coffee, a dinner roll, and a very small plate of salad. With all rolls you may have a piece of cheese, butter and jam.Time to go wake Nancy from her nap, find a place to buy bottle water and possibly a Spanish-English dictonary and then to our 5:00 o´clock class.Love to all,Tom South America
